Updated: Jul 29

NARRAGANSETT, RI (July 26, 2022)- Zachary Hurwitz, an 18-year-old from Narragansett, Rhode Island has formally declared his run to be the 77th Governor of the State of Rhode Island. Mr. Hurwitz started the filing for the Gubernatorial election the day of his 18th birthday, the legal age for running. He is running as an Independent. Zachary, through a pure grass-roots effort, gathered over 1,400 signatures and garnered the necessary 1000 validated and certified signatures from RI Voters to officially be listed on the ballot on November 8, 2022. He is the only Independent Candidate to qualify for the November Gubernatorial Ballot in Rhode Island.

A recent graduate from North Kingstown High School, Zach will be a Freshman at the University of Rhode Island in the Fall, with a concentration in International Diplomacy and French studies. In addition, Zach looks forward to becoming a pilot in the US Air Force, beginning with joining the US Air Force ROTC. Over the past few years, he has been taking private pilot lessons for his certification. In early August, Zach will be travelling to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

Zach shares that his motivation, ambition, and vision is grounded in love for his family and faith which allows him to cultivate and support his independence, goals, and passions. An avid reader since childhood, Zach grew up with the heroic and enticing stories written by Jules Verne and H.G Wells, giving him an interest in history and science as time went on. By the time he was 17, Zach had already started three small businesses, each more creative and successful than the last. His business and work experience has allowed him to gain the knowledge to navigate the real world and grow his leadership skills. His interest in politics was influenced by conversations with his late grandfather, Myron Hurwitz, a WWII veteran who fostered Franco-American relations after the war. Helping the local communities stems from Zach’s love for Rhode Island and its citizens. He looks forward to making a difference in his home state.

Zach, along with his 6 siblings, grew up in a household where love, support, and encouragement to follow dreams was paramount to becoming a well-rounded, independent individual. Attending PTA and School Committee meetings over the past year, competing in triathlons, participating in high school athletics, and being a small business owner has helped Zach get prepared for what lies ahead of him.
In his run for Governor, Zach wants to concentrate on several key initiatives for the people of Rhode Island and looks forward to debating these important issues with the other candidates. Initiatives include:
-Food Insecurity
-Opioid Epidemic
-Mental Health
-Business retention and developing incentives to encourage new businesses

Zach states, "For generations, young people have always made a difference in our country. Whether that be for social or cultural change, they have used the freedoms given to them to make the world a better place. I believe our current generation can do the same for politics. That we can bridge the gap that has made the current political landscape so toxic."
